Accreditation is a way to ensure that college and university programs prepare students for their future profession. Academic programs are reviewed for quality of the education and confirmation of teaching the knowledge and skills that someone needs within a specific discipline.
SFPE works with ABET, which accredits higher education programs in natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology, to accredit fire protection engineering and fire protection engineering technology programs. SFPE assists in defining the criteria that are discipline-specific for fire protection engineering and fire protection engineering technology programs and through staff and volunteers are represented on ABET’s Engineering Area Delegation (EAD), Engineering Technology Area Delegation (ETAD), and the Board of Delegates. SFPE also provides input on industry issues.
Global Efforts
Globally there are many accreditation bodies for higher education programs. Similar to other professions, there are global collaborative efforts to recognize university programs that maintain the same level of quality.
